The final game of the 2011 Smithwood, Inc. t-ball season was on May 27th. I know. I’m as bummed as you are. As I mentioned after shooting the first game, photographing these kids was definitely a change of pace from shooting college ball, and I absolutely loved it. I think what I enjoyed most was seeing how much fun the kids had. Whether they were running the bases or just playing in the dirt, they looked like they were having the time of their lives. In the third game of Smithwood, Inc. t-ball, the kids walked away with some great hits, along with quite a few chuckles as they played around with each other while waiting to bat. For their second home bout of the season, the Big Easy Rollergirls gave fans one hell of a nail-biter. The All-Star bout went down to the final second with a tie score of 119 to 119, and the Big Easy All-Stars fought for the win in an adrenalin-filled overtime. Fans were also treated to a performance from the 610 Stompers during halftime. If you’re unfamiliar with these guys, you really need to check them out. As they say, they’re ordinary men with extraordinary moves. (more…)

Southern Open Karate Championships_8929

In one of the more diverse karate tournaments I’ve been to, competitors came out from across the southern region to showcase their weapon, kata, and kumite skills at the first ever Southern Open Karate Championships. The tournament was held at the Quality Inn and Conference Center in Hammond, Louisiana, and saw a variety of karate styles, from Shotokan to Isshin-Ryū. The tournament also included a demonstration of Traditional Japanese Aikido, which was interesting to see. I have to hand it to Sensei Joey Giluso for providing both spectators and competitors alike with a wonderful exhibition of skill and variety at the tournament. (more…)
