Softball: SLU vs. UAPB

The Southeastern Lady Lions swept UAPB in Sunday’s doubleheader at North Oak Park. With Southeastern scoring eight runs in both games, and both pitchers performing well in the circle, I found myself moving around the field quite a bit. I shot solely with the 7D and 70-200mm f/2.8 and, following up on Saturday’s contest, tried to focus a good bit of my attention on home plate. (more…)

Softball: SLU vs. Alcorn

In a 5-2 win over Alcorn State, the Lady Lions played a high-spirited game that included pitcher Katie Morse striking out five for her first win of 2011. I stuck close to home plate for this one, as opposed to last game, to test out the 7D’s Auto Select focus mode performance on the slides. (more…)

In the final game I shot of the 2010 men’s basketball season, the Southeastern Lions beat Central Arkansas 74-63. The game was shot almost entirely using the 24-70mm f/2.8 on the 7D, with the 50D/70-200mm f/2.8 combo picking up a few long shots. The guys were aggressive under the goal, with Brandon Fortenberry scoring 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half alone. (more…)

In a high energy game Wednesday night, the Lady Lions came out on top, 69-66, over Texas State University. With the Southeastern guards playing aggressively on both sides of the ball, both camera bodies were put to good use. (more…)

Baseball: SLU vs. Tulane

In the Southeastern baseball home opener, the Lions beat the Tulane Green Wave 13-1. The contest was a night game, which always adds a twist to shooting baseball, in both mood and difficulty. Compensating for the low light almost ensures that the ball and bats will blur, which can add a nice effect at times. (more…)

Men’s Basketball: SLU vs. UTA

Southeastern lost to UT Arlington in overtime on Saturday, 68-66. The game was aggressive, and I decided to stick with the 70-200mm f/2.8 primarily, as the guys seemed to be going for shots from the perimeter as often as drives. I had the 24-70mm f/2.8 ready as backup, but I find that it just can’t perform as well during high intensity games, especially with the 70-200′s image stabilizer adding that extra bit of sharpness. Since I was shooting under the goal very little, I decided to try something new and swap out the 24-70 for the Lensbaby on the 50D. (more…)

Softball: SLU vs. Southern

The Lady Lions Softball season opener was this weekend, and in the final game of the Lion Classic Tournament, Southeastern shut out Southern 9-0 in six innings. From a shooting stand point, I find the first game of the season is always an adjustment as far as timing is concerned. The ball movement and the athlete’s reactions to the plays is faster than in the fall sports, and the game moves quicker than with baseball. That being said, it’s one of my favorites to shoot. Men’s Basketball: SLU vs. UTSA

In one of the more exciting games so far this season, the Southeastern Lions beat Southland Conference rivals UTSA 79-73 Wednesday night. I opted for two camera bodies to start, with the 70-200mm f/2.8 as my primary lens and the 24-70mm f/2.8 as my secondary, but quickly swapped the two when I saw how aggressive the guys were playing. Robin Roberts’ Jersey Retirement

Good Morning America host and Lady Lion alumna Robin Roberts returned home to Southeastern on Saturday to celebrate her jersey retirement. Roberts was a member of the Lady Lion basketball team from 1979-1983, during which time she became one of the program’s career leaders in points, rebounds, free throws made, free throw percentage, field goals made, and games played. Roberts is only the second Lady Lion to have her jersey retired, following Queen Brumfield Nard, and one of only four other athletes in Southeastern history.

“I thought the Saints winning it all last year was the highlight. This is truly my sports moment, and to share it with my Southeastern family means everything,” said Roberts. “I continue to be proud to say that I am a Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lion. It’s an honor to be a part of the Southeastern family.”

Fans in the University Center roared Wednesday night as the Lady Lions upset defending Southland Conference champs Lamar in a 67-61 nail-biter. Sporting pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness, Southeastern, led by Chelsea Hix with 12 points, handed Lamar their second loss in the past 13 games. The “Pack the House for Pink” event raised money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in accordance with the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, and saw the largest crowd for a Lady Lions game this season.
